Zhytniy Market - one of Kyiv’s economic centres, the oldest active market in Kyiv located in Podil. Taking its roots from the times of Kiyvan Rus’. The Hlybochytsa River was separating the Zhytniy market space in two. In the first half of ХІІ century, using the funds of trade and craft associations, churches were built around the market space, specifically The Pyrohoshcha Dormition of the Mother of God Church. In the XV century Zhytniy market was a main shopping centre of the city. Twice a year a fair took place here. And it continued to be one of the main shopping centres, mainly because of its proximity to the Dnipro river and a harbor.
On April 10, 1919, the market became one of the centres of the Kurenivka uprising against the Bolsheviks in Kyiv.
In 1980 a new building of Zhytniy covered market was built, according to the design of architects Olga Monina, Valentin Shtolko and designer Boris Bednarsky. On the occasion of the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv, the facade of the market was decorated with a metal decoration «From the Varangians to the Greeks» created by painter, monumentalist, graphic designer Anatoly Domnich. The building of the Zhytniy market is a prime example of late Soviet modernism (also known as constructivism or functionalism).
Interesting fact:
As Stolko wrote, it was planned to “clear away buildings that were not architectural monuments." But alas it was decided to preserve the area and buildings around the market as a protected area, and the list of buildings for demolition were largely reduced. To compensate for the deficit of space architects were forced to lift the edges of the roofs and balconies along the building. The market was designed for 1350 retail spaces - it was the largest covered market in Europe at that time.
