Bohdan Khmelnytsky Monument - the monument of ХІХ century art, one of the symbols of Kyiv. Grand opening was on July 11(23), 1888 at Sophia Square. The erection of the monument began on the initiative of historian Mykola Kostomarov in 1840th.
Because the committee for the creation of the monument was led by Mikhail Yuzefovich - famous for his imperialistic and Ukrainophobic views, the first iteration of the monument was outright chauvinistic and caused a mixed reaction in society. Because of the lack of collected funds and doubts of Governor-General Oleksandr Dondukov-Korsakov, about the advisability of anti-Polish and anti-Semitic monuments, the committee decided to cut the project's budget, leaving only the central figure of the Hetman. When the statue was moved to Kyiv, it was stored for a few years in the yard of the Starokyiv Police Department, because there was a lack of funds for the statue's pedestal.
The residents of Kyiv of that time were joking that Bohdan had not yet arrived in Kyiv but was already arrested. Only in 1885 architect Volodymyr Nikolaev built a cheap design of pedestal and brought it to life. The stones for a pedestal were gifted by the Kyiv Fortress administration. Volodymyr Nikolaev though were working for free and on the funds he saved he had designed a fence with lanterns.
Interesting fact:
Local legend says that when the monument took its rightful place, it turned out that horse was very rudely turned with its tail to the St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery. Because of the outrage of church representatives, the monument was turned around and now, hetman’s mace that was supposed to threaten Poland was aimed somewhere towards Sweden.
