Saint Sophia Cathedral or St. Sophia of Kyiv - XI century cathedral in Kyiv. Originally built in the Byzantine style, but due to numerous destructions in XVII—XVIII were rebuilt, drastically changing its design and now a model of Ukrainian Baroque. One of the few surviving buildings from the times of Kyivan Rus’.
Built in 1017-1037 as a metropolitan cathedral for Kyiv during the reign of Yaroslav the Wise. Got its name from Saint Sophia.
It had the status of a cathedral. Intermittently it was the residence of the Kyiv metropolitans. Up to the middle of the XIII century was used as a main church of Kiyvan Rus’ and a burial place of the great knyazes of Kyiv. At the cathedral the first library was created, and there the first chronicle writings were written. It fell into decline in the 14th century. Restored by the efforts of metropolitan Petro Mohyla and hetman Ivan Mazepa. Was the main church is St.Sophia monastery (from 1638)
In recent years the hypothesis that Sophia of Kiev was founded by Knyaz Volodymyr has gained popularity. This hypothesis is being discussed and not recognised officially. Nevertheless, it was found convincing enough to celebrate in 2011, the 1500th anniversary of Saint Sophia Cathedral’s founding.
Interesting fact:
On the walls of Saint Sophia Cathedral inscriptions and drawings left by priests and visitors of the cathedral still remain. These inscriptions and drawings hold a generally accepted name - graffiti. As of today, more than 7000 graffiti of XI - beginning of XVIII century were discovered. Because most of the graffiti was written by common, albeit literate, residents of Kyiv, it is one of the most possible sources of the Old East Slavic language, that is, the language spoken by the inhabitants of Kievan Rus’ and not the brought in books, Church Slavonic. Analysis of ancient inscriptions shows that they share many features and similarities of the modern Ukrainian language.
