The Monument to the Founders of Kyiv -a memorial, built in 1982 to the 1500-th anniversary of Kyiv.
The sculptural composition were made of forged copper in the shape of a flat boat, where the figures of the Founders of Kyiv: the siblings Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv, and Lybid are placed atop of. The authors: sculptor Vasyl Boroday, architect Mykola Feshchenko.
Kyi is portrayed in a side face, he looks ahead, while holding his long, thin spear in a bent arm. Shchek is standing behind him, his face turned, holding a spear in his left hand and an axe resting on his right shoulder. Khoryv is looking behind, holding in his arms a longbow.
Lybid is placed at the head of the boat, holding her arms as if they were wings. Borodai based the face of Lybid on that of his daughter, artist Halyna Borodai, who died at the age of 31 due to having an incurable disease.
Interesting fact:
Due to metal corrosion in a reinforced concrete and a frame, on February 23, 2010 (2 days before the inauguration of the fourth president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych) a part of the monument collapsed: figures of Shchek and Horyv had fallen over. Some citizens had taken this event as a prophetic sign that Yanukovych’s tenure in office wouldn't end well, because Kyiv hadn’t accepted him. Within three months, the monument was restored and reopened to visitors on May 28, 2010.
