Independence monument - a victory column in Kyiv, commemorating the independence of Ukraine in 1991. It‘s located in the centre of the city, the Independence Square. Stylistically, it presents a mix of Ukrainian Baroque and Empire style. The monument was built in the center of the square for the 10th anniversary of the independence in 2001.
The column is faced with white Italian marble that stands on a pedestal in the form of a Christian temple styled with the use of Ukrainian Baroque, the prototype of which is the Zabrovsky Gate. A figurine of an “Orant of Ukraine” - a woman dressed in traditionally styled ukrainian national costume with a guelder-rose branch in her hand is placed atop the monument. Sculptor Anatoliy Kuschsch chose his daughter, the artist Christina Katrakis to serve as model for the statue. Some elements of the sculpture are coated in gold. The total weight of a sculpture made of cast bronze - approximately 20 tons. To guarantee safety of the monument from any possible natural disasters, a pendulum weighing one and a half tons was placed inside the column, which extinguishes the vibrations caused by external forces
Interesting fact:
It was exactly here, near the Independence Monument, on November 30, 2013, a violent dispersal of a peace protest known as “Euromaidan” with intentions to clear the square of its participants who have been continuously present there since November 21, and their number were changing from night to night, has begun. As of the night of November 30, nearly 400 protesters, mostly students, were present. As a result of «Berkut» actions, at least 79 people were injured. The events of November 30 were a turning point in Ukrainian's protests in the end of 2013, shifting its focus from pro-European to anti-government, as well as making them more widespread.
